Hope is a thing with feathers: fan mix for Freak

Oookay! So, a long, long, time ago, in a galaxy far away, well maybe not another galaxy, maybe just a few MPCs away, I approached Snoink about making a fan mix for Freak, her novel. Yes, I've read it all. Thus, this, lovely thing was made. I have the authority from Our Pink-ness to post this here, but we both wanted to make sure everyone knows that this is VERY, VERY, SPOILERY, and you should READ AT YOUR OWN PERIL. However, if you don't mind that, then be wunderbar.

I have the music in two different formats you can either download the sides, I've cut them in half, each, so it is easier and faster to download, this is on megaupload. Or you can download each song individually, by YSI. If and when the downloads are expired please tell me and I will update the download link.

It's good

They are some fairly dreary lyrics but the cacophonous sound that it is made me pick theme for the Main Theme for Freak.

2. After the Door Slammed Shut: Scummy - Arctic Monkeys [ysi link]

And what a scummy man

Just give him half a chance…

Poor, poor Sadie’s Father.

And oh he must be up to summat

What are the chances sure it's more than likely

I've got a feeling in my stomach

I start to wonder what his story might be

What his story might be

I always imagined this song at the beginning when I first heard it. The freak is walking away from the orphanage, through the industrialized, coal-scattered streets, and up comes this car, and this man, her new master.

3. Beth’s Theme: Blackbird - Sarah McLachlan [ysi link]

Blackbird singing in the dead of night

Take these broken wings and learn to fly

All your life

You were only waiting for this moment to arise

‘Cause what’s a good Freak mix without another analogy, metaphor, etc. to birds. Like it has enough of them already. This is originally a Beatles song, but I adore this version.

4. Sadie’s Theme: Sexy Sadie - the Beatles [ysi link

Sexy Sadie what have you done.

You made a fool of everyone.

You made a fool of everyone.

For Sadie, cause it’s her theme.

5. A Father’s Knowledge: Dear Prudence - the Beatles [ysi link]

Dear Prudence won’t you come out to play?

Dear Prudence open up your eyes.

Perfect conjecture on Sadie’s Fathers thoughts on his daughter.

6. Sadie and the Gun: Gunspeaks/Little Sadie - the Sadies [ysi link]

It has this very smoky, western, cowboy-and-Indians-and-bank-robbers feel to it, which I love, very Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Hole in the Wall Gang like. Like it came out of a gritty, almost more-so-than, Ennio Morconne score.

Went out last night to take a little round,

I met my Little Sadie and I blowed her down.

I run right home and I went to bed,

A forty-four smokeless under my head.

Little Sadie is a 20th Century American Folk Ballad, and has been recorded and preformed various times, also known as “Bad Lee Brown”, “Cocaine Blues”, “Transfusion Blues” and other various things. The earliest written record of this song was as “Bad Lee Brown” in 1922 found in Ozark Folksongs, Vol. II. The first recorded version was in 1930 by Clarence Ashley, this though is a much latter version, 2002.

7. Sadie’s Father’s Theme: For No One - the Beatles [ysi link]

You won’t forget her.

And in her eyes you see nothing,

No sign of love behind the tears cried for no one,

Hmm, his relationship with Carolina, anyone? Perhaps, even Sadie winds her way into this.

8. Interlude No. 1: Apertura - Gustavo Santaolalla [ysi link]

From the soundtrack of Diarios de motocicleta (The Motorcycle Diaries). Mmm, it has a lovely, moving sound. Oh, the title translates from Spanish to Opening.

9. Carolina’s Theme: Happiness is a Warm Gun - the Beatles [ysi link]

She’s not a girl who misses much.

Why? Number one, it’s the Beatles. Number two, it fits Carolina’s craziness to a T. Just don’t let her near a gun.

10. Daniel’s Theme: Rectify - Beth Orton [ysi link]

Well I know I'm gonna stay

Nothing can save me from my life

But for love my mistakes I would rectify…

Ah, Daniel, one of my favorite characters.

11. Bird Woman: El Hada y El Laberinto - Javier Navarrete [ysi link]

I love the simplicity of the music.

12. Whiskey & Cake: Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad - Matt Dusk [ysi link]

We were mixing the bitter with the sweet

Don't try to figure out what we might of had

Just two shots of happy, one shot of sad.

This is directly for the scene when the Freak thinks she is going to be chastised or beaten for her behavior, but Sadie’s father brings her in and sits her down, it is the first time she has ever had whiskey or cake. Let them eat cake.

13. Sadie Said Daniel: Drive My Car - the Beatles [ysi link]

I wanna be famous, a star of the screen,

But you can do something in between.

Baby, you can drive my car, yes I’m gonna be a star,

Baby, you can drive my car, and maybe I’ll love you.

My song version of Sadie and Daniel’s relationship; Daniel being the singer, Sadie being the girl.

14. Carolina Smashes Some Fingers: Bang Bang - Nancy Sinatra [ysi link]

Bang bang, I shot you down

Bang bang, you hit the ground

Bang bang, that awful sound…

For when Carolina slams down on Sadie’s father and put him in the hospital.

15. Going Crazy, Carolina: Sweet Religion - Imogen Heap [ysi link]

Begin end enemy friend, heaven hell sick well,

Truth lies husbands and wives, whisper shout in out in out,

Laughter cry ask reply - good bad happy sad,

Right wrong outcast belong, caged free you and me.

The question is whether ‘sweet religion’ refers to a drug or a human. I think in Carolina’s case, perhaps, both. This is for, as the title suggests, when Carolina goes crazy.

I wonder if we're stuck in Rome.

Without even listening to the lyrics, something about this song makes me think of the closed, dark spaces of Claude’s house, and the inability to move.

2. Claude’s Theme: Broken - Norah Jones [ysi link]

He's got a broken voice and a twisted smile,

Guess he's been that way for quite awhile,

[…]

He may be moving slow…

Claude has a song! It took me till recently but I found one for him.

3. Sadie/Claude: A Winner Needs a Wand - Sufjan Stevens [ysi link]

This bite, You bit on me

You put on me a gown…

That fits me like a quarter door

That hits me like a sound

It's like You shut on me

Or shouldn't be around…

For the very interesting relationship that Sadie and Claude have. Healthy, erm no. I really like the darkness of this song, reminds me again of the rooms in Claude’s house.

5. Daniel’s Back: Just Like Henry - Dressy Bessy [ysi link]

This song has a very poppy feeling to it – poppy as in pop, not as in the poppy flower. I like it, contrasts to some of the mellow moods in the other songs. Plus, Daniel. *winks*

6. Face-off: The Hunt - Louis XVI [ysi link]

For the face-off between Sadie’s father and Claude.

7. Change: Butterflies and Hurricanes – Muse [ysi link]

Not for anyone in particular, I just thought this song fit the aftermath of the flight from Claude’s.

The world always has to intrude. I think it also touches on Sadie’s father’s thoughts on the world he is in.
